As I played a version of golf (calling it 'golf' would defy the trades descriptions act circa 1971) at my mates stag do in the wilds of Warwickshire, the seconds took on the might of newly promoted Stoke Green.
It's fair to say that the Bucks side have romped the division this season, winning 12 games & prior to this game being a mere 80 points ahead of 3rd place. They play the game like they all need to be somewhere else by around 7 oclock, batting as though each player is to be heavily fined if he scores at less than a run a ball. When we played at their place it was a cracker with SG chasing 178, winning 9 down with a mere 15.5 overs to spare.
This game was altogether different. Batting first they went off like the proverbial express train reaching 20-1 after 3 overs before rain interrupted proceedings. Now maybe the rain delay caused many of them to hastily rearrange whatever evenings entertainment lay ahead because within a further 16 overs they committed all types of HariKari to crash to 42 all out, Si Farrant gleefully accepting a cheeky little 7-26.
Our very own Prince Edward look-e-like-e can be a handful at times and it's fair to assume that had the big fella played for us all season we'd be closer to promotion than we currently are (i.e not very close at all). Here's hoping his taller, balder, quicker, uglier older brother joins us next season to strengthen our 1s, leaving Si to get wickets for fun for the 2s in Division 5.
Mikey then smacked the bowling while Tom left the ball with his customary aplomb & by 2.30 the game was all over. I received a text from Deano whilst on the 13th green & the excitement & surprise made me 4 putt from 20 yards after reaching the 450 par four in 2.
That pretty much summed up my day nicely, with a bout of 'golfers tourettes' from yours truly then upsetting the locals. So, despite a 'nil points' for SG, they were still crowned champions as Burnham crumbled to defeat at Windsor.
Burnham were also promoted as Sloughs game had succumbed to the weather. Still, they were definitely the two strongest sides we played this year and deserve a go at a higher level. Best wishes to them both.
Kidmore & Sonning will fight for the ignominy of 9th spot next week with us safely in mid table mediocrity for the 4th season in a row. Now that's what I call consistent.
Back in wet n windy Warwickshire I amassed a feeble 22 stableford points having lost 6 balls & damaged a 5 iron beyond repair (it's in the lake on the 18th at Forest of Arden GC if anyone wants it...).
I think I'll stick to cricket from now on...
