Baggies secure first win of the season!
Byfleet v Bagshot
What an excellent start to the season for the U9s. Our captain for the day, Lewis, won the toss an elected to bowl first.
Lewis and Josh opened the bowling, only conceding 4 runs in their 4 overs (with a net total of -11). The pair bowled brilliantly and Lewis picked up 3 wickets. The first 4 overs set the tone for the remainder of the innings with a sharp catch behind from Harry and some great fielding by Devan and George.
Our second bowling pair, Zara and Devan bowled great line and length. Devan picked up a wicket with a full and straight ball taking out middle stump. These two particularly impressed me by how much they have improved since winter training. They did very well to only concede 15 runs in their 4 overs against some very able batsmen.
The following 4 overs saw ample consistency from Emily and George, who both gained a wicket. Anay displayed excellent fielding with a direct hit from the covers after a brilliant stop.
The final bowling pair was Anay and Harry, showing some real pace which the opposition found difficult to score off. Between them just 9 runs were conceded with both picking up a wicket.
Our fielding was very sharp and we only bowled 7 wides in the 16 overs. This was a real team effort with everyone contributing in the field, bowling and wicketkeeping. Byfleet finished with 219 runs for 9 wickets.
The team were ready to chase the total after being refuelled with Krispy Kreme doughnuts and some squash. The first pair to take to the crease was Devan and Zara. They had lots of wides bowled to them making it difficult to score runs of the bat. However, when the ball was bowled straight they both displayed some very aesthetically pleasing straight-bat shots! Very well done on a good batting performance with no wickets lost!
Our second pair, George and Emily put on quite a performance for all those watching, with a running masterclass. Their backing-up was sensational and what really surprised me was how well they listened to each others calling. These two worked very hard and deserved the 27 runs they added to the board.
Josh and Lewis were next in and had learned a lot from George and Emily with some great running. However, at times their running was not as invincible as they may have thought so! They made up for this with some very powerful shots, that seemed to go straight through the fielders.
Harry and Anay were our final batting pair, with some very attacking play. Strong shots and reckless running saw them add 38 runs on the board. I was very impressed with their shot selection and their ability to find the gaps between the fielders.
The excellent batting from our team saw us achieve a total of 306 with the loss of just 5 wickets.
Such an impressive first performance by all those involved, I have no doubt that if we continue to play this way we will have a very successful season.
A huge thank you to Josh Thompson for playing at such short notice and to Emily Wolfe who did so brilliantly in her last U9 game, good luck in the u10s/11s Emily!
