Dramatic victory sees BCC remain top of the table...

Losing the toss, BCC were inserted on what looked like a good pitch against a Slough 4th XI containing a number of faces who turned out for their 3rd XI last year.

The BCC innings started shakily - with Young departing for 0 in the first over and fellow opener Sutton shortly joined him in the pavilion for 6, both caught behind off good balls from the best opening pair we've seen in a long time. Jem Davis joined James Balcombe at the crease and did well to rebuild the innings with a solid partnership of 59 before Davis was bowled for 24. Deano Dawson picked up where Jem left off, putting on a further 74 with James, until Balcombe was bowled for a very well made 76. Dawson continued to bat well with a variety of partners, reaching 51 before being caught in the deep, but BCC's innings ended in the 51st over for 203 when Simon Farrant was bowled for 1.

Going into the break it felt we were 20-30 runs short of a competitive total, but with the option to take the old ball and a good compliment of bowling options, always felt in the running.

The Slough innings started at a pace, with Jonny A and Tony Roome feeling the force of their opening pair. Two quick wickets, firstly for Atkinson and secondly for Skilton from his first delivery, soon brought two new faces to the crease, but the style of batting did not change much! Number 3 hit a quick-fire 45 before being caught at deep cover, and wickets started to tumble at regular intervals, despite some strong hitting and bad balls being dispatched to the boundary on regular occasions. With spinners at both ends, the ball was doing enough to keep us in the game and once Slough's number 6 had been stumped off the bowling of Jason Skilton for 33, it was game on with Slough needing 27 to win with 4 wickets in hand.

Skilton struck first, with Davis taking a good catch at mid wicket. Atkinson then followed up in the next over with their opening bowler caught behind off a sneaky inside edge onto pad. Runs were being chipped off in the interim, but Skilton took Slough's 9th wicket when their captain was bowled through the gate. A couple of overs went by before Slough reached 201-9 and the game looked to be going their way. Jonny then teased their number 11 into a big hoover across the line, the ball going straight up in the air to mid on where Deano Dawson took a good catch under pressure to give BCC the victory. Unbelievable Geoff (sic). Atkinson 4-53 and Skilton 4-45.

25 points keeps BCC at the top of Div 5b, despite the week previous' abandonment. Unbeaten in 4 and playing 2nd (Royal Ascot) next week.
