Budd's heroics demolish Sonning...

Losing the toss, BCC were asked to bowl first on a dry and worn pitch. Despite wanting to bat, BCC had a reasonable bowling attack on paper and felt confident despite the coin toss not going our way.

Budd and Balcombe were nominated to open the bowling, charged with getting as much out of the new ball before it lost its shine. The first over of the innings from Budd started inauspiciously, with a slow, wide, short ball that was pushed through cover for 2 runs. His second ball could not have been better, a quick, straight, full ball, swinging through the gate of Sonning's opener and crashing into leg stump. Budd's third ball was defended well, and his fourth ball was again quick, straight and swinging, catching the inside edge and onto middle stump. After a sneaky bye and a dot to finish the over, Sonning were 3-2 and slightly shell-shocked.

Balcombe followed this up well and bowled a very good over, despite not taking a wicket! Budd's second over was soon looking like his first, with the second ball trapping the other opener plum LBW for 0. Sonning 5-3 and reeling. It only took another 5 overs for BCC to claim another wicket, with Balcombe cleverly bowling Rob Dewey for 16 round his legs with a full swinging delivery - Dewey had been trying to counteract JB's swing and seam by stepping across his stumps, to good success. At 27-4, Sonning were looking very wobbly and BCC were well in the driving seat.

Sonning soon fell to 29-5, Anderson caught behind by Funnell for 10; Budd picking up his fourth. Two overs later, Balcombe toppled at midwicket, falling on his finger with a suspected dislocation. He left the field (being replaced by Neil Harris!!) and attended A&E with solid figures of 6-1-20-1. Tony Roome replaced JB but it was Budd who tore through the Sonning middle order finishing with figures of 14-4-42-7. Roomey bowled accurately throughout his 7 overs, picking up the final two wickets, Sonning all out for 86 in 27 overs.

Going straight out without tea, BCC made a steady start to their chase, reaching 41 without loss before Geoff Young was caught at cover for 22. Sutton was joined by Stu Derry, who was well bowled by C Rintoul's yorker for 1. Dawson and Sutton then batted well in comfortable circumstances and looked to be cruising to victory before Sutton was bowled for 36 needing 11 runs to win. Ryan Funnell joined Dawson and hit the winning runs four overs later. 25 points by 4pm is a rarity, but one that tasted very nice at tea!!
