League Position: 1st

So close and yet so far…..

Scorebook in the hands of JB1, so again relying on memory and minor exaggeration…

Lost the toss and we had to field, which given the weather forecast seemed to be a wise option by Windsor. With Chuckles away, we opened up with Mighty White and Si Farrant. Good solid start as always, albeit there was no pained expression on Mike’s face this week, and the only risk on his follow through were the studs that fell out of his boots…
Si got the first breakthrough with the opener edging and Ryan Funnell taking the catch behind. Debutante, Iain Hedley, replaced Mike and after a nervous start found his line and length. The Greater Balcombe (as opposed to the Minor one) kept things nice and tidy after Si finished his spell and picked up a wicket either stumped or caught behind (I hate not having the scorebook). Windsor consolidated and one of their batsmen looked in good nick. With the score going to about 90-2 after about 30 overs and the batsmen set, a sizeable target looked in the offing.

However, the introduction of Minor Balcombe (JB3) immediately changed the course of Windsor’s innings. Bowling a fantastic line and length, young Josh ripped apart the middle order on a turning pitch. A good catch in the deep by Ryan Blake at deep backward square, a stumping, a fine catch by Mike W at gully (diving as if his walking stick had snapped), and a great catch behind by keeper Ryan F diving to get a leg side glance, another clean bowled and our Windsor Whirlwind had knocked up an electric thunderstorm (see van choice this week….) worse than the one expected to hit. Dad (JB1) did OK at the other end (I am in charge here, so no praise this week for you changing the field without consulting the skipper!!)
A late stand threatened a slight recovery, but first JB1 and then the introduction of Ben “Hassle” Haslam finished Windsor off. (Ben’s figures of 1 over, 2 wickets for no runs) gave us 50 overs to get the required 147.

Usual duo of JB1 and Mighty White started our reply against the old ball and two wily old spinners. The skipper threw up mortars which were far too tempting! Unfortunately JB1 got caught right on the boundary for 6, MW fell a few overs later, last week’s hero Charles Buxton and Ryan Blake all fell in a series of mortar attacks….. Growler and Ryan Funnell steadied the ship until I had a blue sky moment (not easy in the grey clouds) and got clean bowled like a few before me. Ryan F kept his head and scored off the bad ball, and we crept up towards the first batting point. Santosh fell, as did Si F and this introduced Minor Balcombe at number 10. With the fielders sensing an early victory and moving in for the kill, JB2 then stroked the ball for a couple of beautiful boundaries. With about 40 required (where is that scorebook?), Ryan F finally fell and we were left with Iain and JB2 with too many overs to save the game and seemingly too many runs to get. However, With Iain maintaining Hadrian’s Wall (the Scots are trying to keep us out these days since the referendum…) and blocking the continued mortar attack and sharp shooting from the newly introduced quick bowler and young JB3 caressing balls to all parts of the ground we first got past the 125 and crept closer to the finishing line. Iain blocked more roads than those around Ascot on Saturday, but just when we started to dream of the impossible, the wall was finally breached and Iain fell with us needing only 5 to win the game. A valiant effort nonetheless, leaving the Minor Windsor Electric Storm JB3 aka Josh Balcombe on a magnificent 44 not out! For one so young to have played that kind of innings in an adult match was just fantastic.

MOM: Keeping it in the family, the one, the only: JOSH BALCOMBE. 4 wickets for 30 runs. 44 not out. A Huge contribution from the little guy and no longer the Minor Balcombe.
Memorable Moments. Josh Balcombe.
Other Memorable Moments. Ryan F with 3 catches and a stumping plus a solid 18 runs. (not even a well behaved Santosh can get in here this week)
Other Other memorable moments. Ben “Hassle” Haslam mopping up the tail clean bowling the last two batsmen.

Isn’t it great to see all the memorable moments being performed by the colts. Well done guys. A bit more responsibility from the adults next week!

Still top as other results keep us there, but the pack are chasing, so back to winning ways next week!

This week’s van is………………………… (I want to test the Chaiman’s picture Gallery of Vans for Team App….) is………………. The Renault Twizy Cargo……… Driven by Josh Balcombe, it is a small van, electric, a great drive but we ran out of charge just before the destination…. If you don’t have Team App to get the picture, you can google it!
