Newbury head home early..

Newbury 2's 50-1 off 16.4 overs. Rained off

Not much to report this week, so will have to pad it out a bit...

Newbury were inserted, and with Chuckles on 2nd XI duties, we opened up with senior colts Matt Alexander and Jared Palmer fresh from their bowling duties on their Friday evening U17 league victory at Merrow. Both bowled exceptionally well. Matt had a few edged past the slips and gully early on, but Jared took the only wicket of the day as he had the left handed opener expertly caught in the gully by the youthful Nigel Rice. Jared finished his spell 7-3-18-1, which was pretty impressive. Harrison Button took over from Matt, and Deadly Hedley the other. Soon after the rain started and we all had to troop off to collect the covers and have a cup of tea.

After losing time, having a bit of a leak on the square and trying to clear some puddles from the outfield, we had an early tea. Bagshot were keen to get the game on as everything dried out. After consulting Valley End groundsman, who thought it was playable, it must have been the thought of facing Harrison and Deadly which was too much for the Newbury skipper, who said in his opinion the pitch was not playable and would adversely affect his teams chances of a fair result.
To be fair the outfield did have a few patches which where it remained very wet, but it was a shame not to play when every other game in the TVCL managed to get their games in and the Baggies were willing to give it a go.
BUT..... Bagshot players were still keen to play, so we decided to have an internal 15 over 6 a side. Here we discovered some untapped talent and glimpses of brilliance from one or two players.... Matt Alexander guided his carefully selected team against the what seemed weaker Matthew Funnell side (why was I not selected first Matthew??). I feel Matt picked his all rounders wisely. Matthew F and his fellow batsman made a steady if unspectacular start against a very accurate attack. Some things get blurry in my old mind here, but I do remember a fantastic spell from a left widearm spinner who bamboozled Matthew's team and tore the heart out of it with figures "approaching" 3 overs, 3 wickets for probably less than 10. The first of these was a skied catch to Baiju beautifully taken at long on, the second turned at least a foot (or the width of one)... for Nigel to whip of the bails for a stumping, and the third had the batsman all inside out only to see of the off stump nearly knocked down (the bail did just drop off). He wants to remain nameless, but this may in fact treble his wicket tally for Bagshot CC. I for one will remember and recount this bowling feat on many occasions in the future. It may be the skipper uses this secret weapon in future league games in spite of some guffaws from his teammates on its suggestion.
Matthew F's team set us a paltry target of 72 to win off 15 overs. Needless to say , with the talent available, Matt, Baiju, Nigel, Jared, Ryan F and Growler all scoring heavily it was not long before Santosh had to retrieve the ball once more from the bund after a handful of overs. I also neglected to mention (as they obviously had not noticed) that they had one fielder less than us as Barry (picked ahead of his skipper but I am not bitter about this) was umpiring for both sides.... All had a bat and bowl and at least had a full game of cricket!
After a quick clear up, a number set off back to the club to watch the 2nd team gain victory over Sonning 2's. With usual 3's players Josh Nakarja taking 3 wickets, Chuckles 2 wickets and Ryan Blake making a fantastic 66 to help them win the game, the still slightly sulky 3rd team skipper cheered up considerably until the 92nd minute in Marseille.

We welcome Sonning 3's next week.
