Boney "N"d for Monty

Bagshot 3's 173-9 45 overs
Sonning 3's 174-5 35.1 overs

Baggies 3's were battered and bruised and eventually went down with a valiant rearguard action.

Having lost the toss on a green and pleasant Valley End pitch, we were put in to bat.
Matthew Funnell and Harrison Button offered to open the batting, and started really well against a seaming ball. Harrison looked very assured and patient. These two put on over 40 for the first wicket against a pretty good seam attack. Unfortunately Matthew sliced a drive and was caught for 18, and suddenly the game changed for the worse as Ryan came and went for a duck (bowled by a cutter which anyone might have struggled against), Matt Alexander got just 2, then Harrison went for a fine 28 which left old stalwarts Nigel Rice and the skipper in the middle to stop the rot or we might be home for an early tea.
Nigel then promptly offered catching practice to the gully (must be a union relations thing), and we are about 60-5. Some sound words of advice from Growler Major to the incoming Growler Minor obviously didn't work as he went back first ball caught and bowled. 60 odd for 6. Some semblance of calm arrived with Monty Lynch, as we applied ourselves to stop the collapse. However, the hamstrung Growler then asked Nick to make a quick single. In Monty's effort to avoid being run out, he also had to jump over the fast approaching ball, diving like Tom Daly, only forgetting there was no water where he was due to land. The resulting impact is in the match photo as Nick had to wend his way to Frimley Park Hospital to have his shoulder looked at. I personally thought he would have been better batting on with one arm (his right arm was OK after all) and going to A&E at tea, but with the clavicle pointing upwards in a nice lump he had to reluctantly withdraw.
Cometh the hour, cometh the Man"dal". Santosh had obviously been taking some supplements or other, as he and the skipper then put together a stand of 90 runs to get the total to some respectability. What a great pleasure for Growler to see. We had such nice conversations between the overs as well! Unfortunately once again, the skipper asked him for a quick single, but Santosh not fancying a trip to A&E and leaving the team even shorter, was run out. An elevated Bomber Harris came to the wicket at no. 10. I don't ever recall having batted with Bomber. so I was suitably impressed with his first scoring shot which was a cut behind point for 2. What I had not known was he was going to play the same shot to the next 5 balls regardless of where the ball pitched. He did change it after discussion, and got to 6 before being bowled. Chuckles was asked to assist the skipper to get to the next scoring point, and we trotted off to the gazebo for tea a ball or two later without reaching the target with Growler still on 79*.......

Still something to defend even with only 10 players.

One of the Sonning openers decided to attack from the word go and Chuckles had him very well caught at mid -off by mini-Growler. Harrison started for us the other end, and bowled very tightly, and we got another wicket soon after as their number 3 lashed at a ball which flew to the agile Nigel Rice. Having diverted the fizzing ball upwards, he leapt like a leapard to grab the ball venus flytrap stylie... Amazing to behold.
Chuckles got another couple of wickets, while their skipper played his shots at the other end, but a good stand then developed and a couple of hard dropped catches, and then Chuckles having to leave the field as well, meant runs were a little too easy to come by. The 9 remaining players did try exceptionally hard, and their skipper went on to score a good 88 surviving a very tight run out call, two LBW shouts and a sharp catching chance before Bomber finally bowled him with his slider which went under the bat... Matt Alexander bowled well for little reward, as did Matthew Funnell and Santosh in the search for wickets, but the opposition eventually coasted home.
Great spirit from all. Thank you. Get well soon Nick. Don't let anyone tell you that you have a chip on your shoulder. Ooops, sorry.

NEXT SATURDAY. Due to some absences from quite a number of players, we are going to be short of players. For those who have not done so please put your availability onto Pitchero as soon as possible. By way of encouragement, I can offer those who are playing in the 3's next week a HEDLEY TEA. Now if that doesn't make you want to change plans and play cricket, nothing will!
