Bomber takes catch - SHOCK!

The meet time was somewhat early for Deadly and Growler this week as they departed at 9.30 on their charity cycle/cricket cycle ride to and from Sonning.
We arrived an hour before the start thankfully. Deadly said he would prefer to open the bowling straight after the ride there rather than have time for the legs to stiffen up! So toss duly won, we inserted the opposition.
Iain (Deadly) got choice and went with the considerable wind and mini Growler (Jack Rowlett) had to charge into it. Whether it was the sheer pace old Deadly got that blew the sightscreen over, or The Cuban General (aka Great Wall, aka Santosh) exhaling his cigar smoke, it was blowing a gale. Iain got it to swing and has never bowled so fast. Jack also managed to get it to swing too, and got the first wicket with Deadly taking an excellent catch at point. Iain tied up the other end beautifully. With the oppo scoring at less than 3 an over, all was well. i decided the younger generation should bowl up the hill into the wind, and Ollie Blake replaced Jack, who after 5 overs was exhausted!
Mini Growler did summon up enough strength and speed to run out the other opener shortly afterwards though.
Having exhausted Deadly with 11 overs straight (my thought being he wouldn't cycle back too quick), the skipper turned to Gunpreet. Gun stun gunned the leagues highest run scorer with a full toss which Naqash pulled straight up in the air to backward square leg towards Bomber, who had dived full length behind him with one eye shut and the ball swirling and with the whole team holding their collective breath... he took it comfortably. Santosh, there is hope yet...
OK, this report is going on too long. Needed another youthful player to bowl into the wind, and having run out of any volunteers, Bomber took the job on. What an inspire decision it was. His pace must have surprised the batsman as he bashed one straight into the safe hands of Pete Blake at as long on as you could get. In fact Bomber and a very accurate Gunpreet bamboozled the middle order as wickets tumbled. Gunpreet got two more, one caught behind by Nigel Rice and one the skipper caught by mini growler in the deep (practicing for the U17's the following day). Bomber got another wicket and Gunpreet forced another onto his stumps (Nigel had to point it out to the square leg umpire very politely as always). However a late rally (from the 10th and 11th men who turned up late, saw them increase the tempo and the runs. Two good run outs from Big Growler (I prefer major really) and Gunpreet saw the home side all out for 218 in 46 overs.

Youthful opening partnership of Ollie Blake and Matthew Funnell, saw us off to a great start. Ollie caressing the ball to the boundary regularly until he was caught for 18. The skipper and Matthew then quelled the rain and the Sonning attack and another rain break, before the heavens opened at about 6.15pm and by 6.30pm we called a halt to proceedings with us on 66-1 of about 20 overs.

Deadly and I then got thoroughly soaked riding back to the club. Many thanks to everyone once again who has donated. We are over £700 currently (including the gift aid). The site is still open to donate!

MOM: Mine has to be Deadly Hedley for coming up the the foolhardy idea of riding to and from Sonning, and bowling 11 overs straight, taking a catch, and cycling back.
Memorable Moments: BOMBER taking a catch...
Other Memorable Moments: Gunpreet 4-56. The Shane masterclass really worked!
Other Other Memorable Moments: Whatever Santosh was on on his night out afterwards. It looked a great night out. Pictures available on request...
Thanks guys. Big game against Reading 4's this Saturday.
