Young and Old dismiss Hayes before rain stops play

Hayes 4's 104 ao
Bagshot DNB

With a rather damp pitch but 21 players wanting to play some cricket (Hayes 11th player obviously knew what was to happen as he never turned up), I lost the toss and we were sent out to field into the light drizzle to try and get a game in before the forecast heavy rain arrived.
With Chuckles, Deadly, Andy P all away, we had only a youthful attack this week. Mini Growler Jack opened up from the far end and Mini Spud James from the tumbledown pavilion end.
Jack got the first wicket by bowling a pretty innocuous half tracker which the opener sent the ball like a tracer straight in the direction of Nigel Rice (superman ACAI) at gully to take a remarkable catch. To be fair, he did not have time to move out the way (as I would have done), and it stuck, although I think it took about 4 overs for the heat to normalise in his hands... With Hayes obviously looking for quick runs, Jack decided that another less than memorable ball was in order and sent another one half ways down this time for the Hayes batsman to thrash it high behind square over Rick Medlock at cover. However, Rick Medlock rolled back the years by sprinting (as only we over 40's (!) can) to take an overhead catch which Deano would have only dreamt about...
Jack was on a roll now, and the 4th batsman was so shocked that he could actually bowl a decent ball that he lobbed a catch straight to Adam Hendries who took it comfortably. Mini G then decided after 4 overs that he had bent is back too far with those half trackers and had to stop bowling. Adam Hendries took over and it took a couple of overs to find his range, but once he did he was soon beating the bat regularly. The Hayes no. 5 had slapped a few over mid wicket, and the skipper moved himself out to the mid wicket boundary for one ball and BOOM, hey presto he sent the ball straight into my hands. I love it when a plan comes together.
Paul Kelly replaced young James W, who had had little luck this week, and nearly got a wicket first ball as the batsman lobbed the ball into the air. Having nearly made it to the other end, got his hands to it, Paul obviously decided to be generous and somehow spilled it. Highly comical though... Luckily Adam H cleaned him out next over... PK had no real luck but was frugal as the batsman decided to hold back on the more adventurous shots which had got the other batsmen out. Will Gardiner came on for him and Chris Floater (on debut) from the pavilion end, and these two youngsters soon collected the wickets we needed with two apiece. Mini G took a good catch for one off Will, two LBW for left arm over Chris including the Hayes skipper, and Will got the last caught by Adam Hendries as the hosts made 104 in the drizzle.
A marvellous Mark Gardiner tea although his son nicked the last of the pudding before I could get any (you may not bowl again Will...!) was consumed whilst the rain just got heavier and heavier and heavier. It was soon obvious that no further play would be possible. The only other excitement came from the opposition letting off a fire extinguisher on the team bus.
Well done to the opposition for batting on in not so nice conditions.
Well done to the young bowlers who took all the wickets, especially Will G 2-11, and Chris 2-2 on debut.
Well done to the oldies (there is no such word as middleagies and it sounds as if we are even older..) who took the remarkable catches...
Great Gardiner's tea.
Barrie, thanks again for umpiring....

Looks like we have good availability next week for the home game against Sonning, so all we need now is for the rain to stop. PLEASE...
Unbeaten in 7.....
Availability after that is looking less than promising, so please, please please, if you are available or could be available..., make yourself available...

Thanks
Growler
