Batting first on winning the toss, Andrew got us off to a positive start. We had fifty runs on the board within eight overs, but a change in pace brought instant reward for Waverley and became the recurring theme as the wicket became harder to play shots on. At 110-2 we seemed well set for a big score but the ball began to keep low from the club end, Adam (on sunday debut) falling to an ankle biter. Deano and Rick both dug in, Rick eventually having to retire with a hamstring injury as we posted 193 off nearly 50 overs. Credit to Waverley as they worked hard in the field on the warmest Sunday so far.
A minor back injury curtailed Josh N's participation with the ball meaning that Jonny A ended up bowling at both ends. Taking the pace off the ball was the order of the day after Josh Brown's initial burst with the new ball. Catches from Baiju, Deano and Bomber (having dropped an easier return catch attempt) saw Waverley needing over sixty with four wickets left. It looked like they were going to try and shut up shop but some of the lower order had other ideas. It all came down to an exciting finish as they needed twelve to win off Jonny's last over. A further wicket fell as they were left needing six off the last ball with two wickets left. A single was all they managed, finishing three runs short.
A second close finish in two years against one of our longest standing opponents.
Special mention to young Chris Floater who filled in as sub fielder at short notice to cover for Rick. A credit to the colts section, not a single misfield throughout their innings.
