We faced Valley End on Sunday, with only 2 of our number actually of the U9 age group, with the rest U8 and U7.
Valley End batted first. We bowled and fielded very well again, taking wickets regularly. Sam took 2 early wickets as did Rhys and Ryan follwed up with another 2. Emily in her first game for the side took 3 for 11 runs in 3 overs, a fantastic spell of bowling. Whilst Vilas, Rian, Essa and Jonathon didn't pick up wickets they bowled well and were unfortunate to bowl to the Valley End middle order which rallied well after a slow start. We managed to keep them to under a 100 runs scored as a result of taking 10 wickets.
We were chasing 92 to win. If we batted as we had against Camberley last week, we had every chance. It proved to big an ask on this occasion as they has some very fast and accurate bowlers. Vilas and Jonathon did start well and scored 2 and 7 respectively. With extras, we were off to a positive start. Sam and Rhys again added runs, but the quality of the bowling made it hard for us to get the singles and 2s/3s that we got last week. Both boys scored 4 a piece. Essa and Emily put on some good runs for us as the 3rd pair marched on, but we were well behind the rate being asked. Our last pair of Ryan (13) and Rian (2), did their very best. The loss of 10 wickets, including some avoidable dismissals by the team, cost us dearly.
A lesson learned hopefully. If we had lost just 3 wickets like last week instead of 10, our score would have been 84 and much closer to the VECC target. We ended up on 56, 36 runs short. If we can understand the run rate needed ie just over 4 an over on this occasion, not run unecessary singles and protect our wickets, we will improve again. Bearing all this in mid, it was another solid performance. On Sunday we were just outgunned by a slighty older and bigger side.
