Sleighty makes overdue debut

The Baggies attended the Farnham festival on Sunday 17th July with a
team comprising Hayden, Rocco, James, Callum, Cameron, Harry, Charlie
and Oli. The team finished second in their group, with wins over
Normandy and Farnham and a narrow defeat to Valley End.
In the 3rd\4th place playoff we lost to East Molesey, a game which
might have gone the other way, though by the time this game started, at
5:00, and in warm conditions, tiredness was beginning to take it’s
toll.
As we’ve come to expect from attending several U8 Farnham competitions,
the festival was fantastic, very well organised and the last games were
even played in brilliant sunshine after cloudy and overcast conditions
in the early part of the day.
The team played well throughout, and were competitive in all the games
they played. The defeat to Valley End could have gone either way if
luck and the odd umpiring decision had gone our way. I don’t have the
scorecards to hand, as they had to be handed in, but particular mention
should go to Harry B who bowled well all day, despite suffering from
what looked like a hangover, although Dad assured me it was due to a
sleepover the previous night, and only having three hours sleep!
Charlie clattered some hefty boundaries, and bowled with aggression,
and Cameron bowled accurately and batted sensibly in all the games.
James played correctly with the bat, kept wicket tidily in 2 matches,
and bowled a nagging line and length. Hayden hit a number of boundaries
throughout the day, kept wicket well and bowled and Skippered with
authority.
However, the awards were distributed as follows: For his pacey and
accurate bowling, the bowling award went to Callum. He also took a
catch, and batted solidly. For his batting and the tip and run style he
demonstrated, his excellent running, and the late cut which was on show
all day, the batting award went to Rocco. Finally, the player of the
tournament award went to our debutant, Oli. He took wickets, ran
people out, scored runs in every game and demonstrated incredible game
awareness and confidence in his first outing for the Baggies. I am
somewhat baffled as to how we haven’t managed to get him to play for us
before this season, but I am delighted his Bagshot career has finally
begun and I look forward to seeing him in a Baggies shirt for the rest
of the season. Well played Oli!
However, I should say that the team all performed to a high standard
all day, and I was extremely proud of the whole team, the way they
played and the way they conducted themselves on the field, which is
important. Due to a team dropping out at the last minute, we only got
the call to attend the festival on the previous Thursday evening, so a
great effort by all for turning up, and my thanks go to the parents for
giving up their entire Sunday at short notice. The team all received
medals, and certainly all the players richly deserved them. Well done
to all.
I should also mention Frank who bravely turned out for Farnham who were
one short and sustained a nasty blow on the hand. He batted superbly,
hit a well-timed boundary off his brother’s bowling, and showed courage
in his innings. We hope you’re fully recovered, Frank.
